General Financial Aid Eligibility

To be eligible for most types of financial aid, you must:

  • be accepted into a degree program
  • demonstrate financial need, as shown by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • be enrolled at least half-time in coursework that will count towards your degree each term (see next section)
  • maintain satisfactory academic progress (see policy)

Enrollment for Financial Aid Purposes

For purposes of Financial Aid you are considered to be a full-time student by taking at least six (6) credit hours per term until you reach Dissertation and Pre-Doctoral Internship. At that point, you are considered a full-time student up to the first two years of Pre-Doctoral Internship and up to one year of enrollment in Dissertation. While enrolled in Dissertation, you must contact your Dissertation chair prior to the start of each term and provide the chair with a Dissertation progress report. You may be enrolled in Dissertation up to one year. If you do not complete your dissertation during that period and are not enrolled in any other course or internship, you will register in Dissertation Extension to remain in the program, but will not be eligible to receive financial aid.

General Financial Aid Process

You will need to do the following to apply for Financial Aid:

  • Obtain a pin number at www.pin.ed.gov and fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Make sure to include University of the Rockies school code: G35453.
  • Complete the Master Promissory Note (MPN) and Entrance Counseling
  • Review and sign the award letter
  • Complete any additional paperwork required by the financial aid office

Financial Aid Forms

For a list of downloadable financial aid forms, please visit our campus resources page.

Application Deadlines and Renewal of Aid

The application priority deadline for financial aid is June 1st. Applications will be accepted after this date but may not receive priority. Financial Aid is not automatically renewed every year: you must re-apply by filing the FAFSA and other paperwork as necessary. The Master Promissory Note (MPN) is good for 10 years unless you change schools or lenders.

Verification

You may be randomly selected for verification. The central processing system randomly selects approximately 30% of the students at University of the Rockies for verification throughout the year. If selected for verification, you must submit a verification worksheet and a signed copy of the applicable year's tax returns to the financial aid office within 30 days of notification. A copy of the verification worksheet can be obtained from the financial aid office. Failure to comply with this Federal requirement may result in loss of eligibility for financial aid during that award year.

Financial Aid Disbursements

Loan payments are split into five equal disbursements and are delivered to the school from the disbursing agent, either by Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) or paper check. The funds are then posted to your account during the first week of every term. You are responsible for any balance that financial aid does not cover and must adhere to the tuition payment policy.

Federal Loans

Stafford Subsidized (Interest Rate is 6.8%):

This loan is need-based. The government pays the interest while the student is in school and during the student's 6-month grace period. The student is held responsible for the paying the interest after that.

Stafford Unsubsidized (Interest Rate is 6.8%):

This loan is not need-based. The student is held responsible for paying the interest on this loan starting from the time of the first disbursement.

Graduate PLUS Loan (Interest Rate is 8.5%):

This loan is not need-based. The student is held responsible for paying the interest on this loan starting from the time of the first disbursement. The approval for this loan is established through a credit check. If denied, a student may still apply using a co-signer.

Alternative Loans:

Alternative Loan applications are available through the financial aid office. This loan is not need-based. The approval for this loan is established through a credit check and the interest rate is tiered based on the credit score of the borrower. If denied, a student may apply using a co-signer. Please see the financial aid office to apply.

Lenders

Click here to view information about a particular lender or to start the loan application process. Please note that the normal loan processing time with these lenders is 3-5 business days. If you wish to pursue other lenders, please be advised that the processing time may be longer.

Institutional Loans

University of the Rockies Institutional Loan is offered to students who meet the approval criteria and is available in two options. Option 1: This loan offers no fees, a 4.5% interest rate, and similar repayment terms that you currently receive under the federal student loan program. Option 2: This loan offers a "zero interest" loan with no origination fees and a zero percent interest rate for the lifetime of the loan with a minimum payment of $50.00 per month while you are in attendance at University of the Rockies. Current recipients of Graduate PLUS Loans are not eligible to participate in this loan program. The maximum loan amount is $20,500 per academic year. If an Institutional Loan borrower wishes to apply for a Stafford Loan after the Institutional Loan has been applied to the borrower's ledger, any Stafford Loan proceeds will reduce the amount of the Institutional Loan. Late charges may apply. In-school deferment is only applicable while borrowers are in attendance at University of the Rockies. For more information, please contact your Financial Services Advisor.

Veterans Benefits

University of the Rockies is approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs. For students taking advantage of their veterans benefits, payment is deferred for the first 60 days of continuous enrollment in a degree program. Please see the Financial Aid Office for more information.

Scholarships (On-Campus Students)

During each academic year, University of the Rockies awards several scholarships to on-campus students that reflect its commitment to its core values of Integrity, Service, Excellence, and Diversity. Scholarship recipients are selected by a variety of committees representing faculty and administrators.

International Student: From time to time, University of the Rockies selects a student from a developing country to receive a full tuition scholarship for the duration of the MA and/or PsyD program. The student must agree to return to his or her country of origin to practice as a psychologist. Past recipients of this award are from Turkey, Kenya, and Guatemala. The 2007 recipient is from Ghana.

Outstanding Student of the Year: Each year the Faculty Senate grants a tuition scholarship to the PsyD student they consider to be the person who most represents academic excellence, leadership, and service to the field of psychology.

J. Frank Rice Memorial Scholarship: Awarded in honor of J. Frank Rice, PhD, a founding faculty member and Board Member of the Colorado School of Professional Psychology, this tuition scholarship is given each year to an outstanding PsyD student of color who values the pursuit of knowledge, serves the common good, and intends to become a clinical psychologist. To be considered for this award, students may apply to the Student Diversity Association through the office of the Director of Diversity.

James R. Gregg Memorial Scholarship: Awarded in honor of James R. (Jim) Gregg, PsyD, an alumnus of COSPP, this scholarship is given each year to a student who demonstrates determination, tenacity, personal growth, and commitment to serving others. To be considered for this award, PsyD students may apply to the Student Association through the office of the Dean of Students. Applications of the top three candidates, as selected by the Student Association, are forwarded to the Gregg family for final selection.

The Josephine Lyle Cowan and E. Garland Cowan, Sr., Memorial Scholarship: Josephine and Garland Cowan were people of faith and service who valued education and supported people who devoted part of their professional life to religious service. Each year the Cowan Family Trust selects, from University of the Rockies nominations, a student who displays the qualities University of the Rockies expects of a professional psychologist, and who intends to provide some professional service to people in religious organizations. To be considered for this award, students may submit a letter of application to the office of the Dean of Students.

Rights and Responsibilities

You may receive a copy of the Borrower Rights and Responsibilities from the Financial Aid Office.

Entrance and Exit Counseling

If you receive financial aid, including Grad PLUS Loans, you must receive Entrance Counseling before aid is disbursed. You must also go through Exit Counseling within 30 days of separation from the school. The entrance and exit counseling is available on http://www.mappingyourfuture.biz/. You may contact the financial aid office to receive individual repayment or account information.

Return of Title IV Funds

Should you drop from the program, the Financial Aid Office will perform Return of Title IV Funds. This process ensures that the school keeps the amount of financial aid earned by you and returns any unearned funds back to the lender. This process may result in you owing the school for tuition and fees.

Tax Statements/Credits

You will receive your 1098-T statements no later than January 31st as required by law. This statement may be used to claim Education Credits, such as The Hope Credit or Lifetime Learning Credit. The statement is mailed to the address on file; it is your responsibility to ensure the address is correct. If you do not receive your 1098-T statement please contact the Financial Aid Office.

Non-Degree Seeking Student

If you are admitted as a non-degree seeking student, you do not qualify for financial aid.
